The newly-appointed VNU Vice President, Nguyễn Hồng Sơn, was born in Đông Sơn district, Thanh Hóa province in 1964. He received his BA in Economics in 1989 and PhD in Political Economy in 1993 from Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia. In 2005, he was awarded the title of Associate professor and that of Senior lecturer (first-class) in 2016.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyễn Hồng Sơn held the positions of Researcher, Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP), Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (1996 to 2007); and Vice Rector, VNU University of Economics and Business (2007 to 2011).

Concurrently, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyễn Hồng Sơn serves as a member of VNU Party Committee; Secretary of VNU UEB Party Committee; Rector of VNU UEB; Member of the National Monetary and Financial Policy Advisory Council; Member of the CPV Central Theoretical Council; Vice Chairman of Vietnam Economics Science Council under the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development; Member of Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry Executive Committee; and Member of the Vietnamese Economic Association.
