The other higher education institutions listed in the top 10 by this ranking include Hanoi University of Technology (3rd), Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (6th), Ton Duc Thang University (9th), and Duy Tan University (9th).

At national level, Vietnam was ranked 10^th in 2016, 12^th in 2017 and 10^th in 2018 among the 29 countries in the Asia Pacific Region ranked by the Nature Index.

The Nature Index provides absolute and fractional counts of publication productivity at the institutional and national level, as such, is an indicator of global high-quality research output. Data in the Nature Index are regularly updated and published at https://www.natureindex.com. Data for the current year (from 1/7/2017 to 30/6/2018) were included in the ranking calculation. From 2016, the Nature Index began publishing the annual rankings for the publication of countries and higher education institutions.

The Nature Index ranking is calculated based on the following two criteria:

1. Article Count (AC): A country or institution is given an AC of 1 for each article that has at least one author from that country or institution. This is the case regardless of the number of authors an article has, and it means that the same article can contribute to the AC of multiple countries or institutions;

2. Fractional Count (FC): To get a sense of a country’s or institution’s contribution to an article, and to ensure that they are not counted more than once, the Nature Index uses FC, which takes into account the share of authorship on each article. The total FC available per paper is 1, which is shared among all authors under the assumption that each contributes equally.
