VNU HUS High School for Gifted Students contestant wins a gold medal at the 2020 International Chemistry Olympiad
Nguyen Hoang Duong, an 11th grader from VNU HUS High School for Gifted Students was one of the four Vietnamese gold medalists at the 52nd International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2020).

As announced by the Ministry of Education and Training on July 30, 2020, all four Vietnamese contestants won gold medals at IChO 2020.

The four gold medalists are Nguyen Hoang Duong, an 11th grader from VNU HUS High School for Gifted Students; Ly Hai Dang, a 12th grader from Tran Phu High School for Gifted Students (Hai Phong city); Pham Trung Quoc Anh, a 12th grader of Phan Boi Chau High School for Gifted Students (Nghe An province); and Dam Thi Minh Trang, a 12th grader from Le Hong Phong High School for Gifted Students (Nam Dinh province).

All the Vietnamese contestants at Echo 2020 were high scorers, namely Ly Hai Dang scored 97/100 points, ranked 5th among 231 contestants; Nguyen Hoang Duong scored 94.08/100 points, ranked 9th; Pham Trung Quoc Anh scored 92.5/100 points, ranked 15th; and Dam Thi Minh Trang scored 91.12/100 points, ranked 22nd.

By overall result, the Vietnamese team ranked 2nd, after the US team. This is the highest result the Vietnamese team has ever achieved at the International Chemistry Olympiad.

The 52nd International Chemistry Olympiad, hosted by Turkey, was held in the form of a remote access exam due to the Covid-19 epidemic. The Vietnamese team took the exam at Hanoi National University of Education and was monitored online via the camera system in real-time mode by the IChO 2020 Organizing Committee in Turkey. This exam attracted contestants from 60 countries, a decrease of 20 countries compared to the previous year.
