On September 23, 2020, the closing ceremony of the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) 2020 was held at VNU University of Engineering and Technology.

All four Vietnamese contestants won medals in the competition. Specifically, Bui Hong Duc, a 12th grader from VNU HUS High School for Gifted Students, won a gold medal. As an 11th grader, Bui Hong Duc also won a gold medal at the 2019 IOI. Over the past 20 years, Bui Hong Duc, the only student from Vietnam, has won two IOI gold medals consecutively.

The bronze medal went to Tran Quang Thanh, a 12th grader from the High School for Gifted Students under Hanoi National University of Education.

As the winner of three consecutive gold medals, one at the Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad and two at the International Olympiads in Informatics 2019 and 2020, Bui Hong Duc is expected to be the first student awarded first-class Labour Order in accordance with Decree 110/2020/ND-CP issued by the Prime Minister on September 15, 2020 on rewarding students winning prizes in national and international competitions.

Do Phan Thuan, Head of Vietnam IOI delegation 2020, said that the International Olympiad in Informatics 2020, hosted by Singapore, was held in the form of a remote access exam due to the Covid-19 epidemic. This exam attracted 343 contestants from 87 countries and territories. The Vietnamese team ranked 1st in Southeast Asia and 9th in the medal tally of IOI 2020.
