11. Summary of major findings:

- The dissertation is a systematic and comprehensive research which adopts interdisciplinary and area studies approaches to social transformations in Hanoi peri-urban area in the context of urbanization through a case study carried out in Từ Liêm district.

- The dissertation suggests practical issues which require closed attention during the processes of planning and making policies in order to ensure their appropriateness to the life of peri-urban community in the context of urbanization and the integration of a traditional agricultural society into an modern urban society.

- Dissertaton’s results offer a more profound and visible characterization of social transformations of the peri-urban community in the context of today’s urbanization. Dissertation’s results can be used as a reference for teaching and for further research which employs interdisciplinary and area studies approaches to examine socio-cultural space of suburban areas in the context of urbanization.

- The dissertation has discovered new insights into the impact of urbanization on social transformation at individual, family and community levels.

- Findings presented in the dissertation have also contributed to a more profound and comprehensive identification of the adaptability and integrality of peri-urban community when experiencing urbanization, which suggests a broader issue of turning existing attributes into international competitive advantages, an essential quality in the active and comprehensive integration into the world.

12. Applicability

- The dissertation contributes to discussions on social transformations during the process of urbanization in a certain area by adopting interdisciplinary and regional studies approaches, diversifying the existing literature body including research using these new approaches to examine different areas/regions in the land of Vietnam.

- Discussions and conclusions drawn from the research are somewhat significant to local governments and managers in planning and implementing social policies to sustainably develop peri-urban areas.

- Dissertation and material collected thorough the research process are useful sources of material to further teaching and researching activities.

- Transformations in residential space of peri-urban community in Hanoi under the impact of urbanization;

- The role of public space in the lives of people in contemporary urban suburbs;

- Cultural interacts between immigrants and native people during the process of urbanization;

- Adaptation of households losing their farming land during the process of urbanization;

- Current state of and recommendations on policies, mechanism and measures to mobilize “social capital” to develop non-agricultural vocations serving the New Rural Development program in Hanoi suburbs;

- Building up urban culture for peri-urban communities in the context of today’s urbanization;

- The role of per-urban area in the contemporary urban development;

- Preserving and promoting socio-economic values of old villages in peri-urban area in the context of today’s urbanization;

- Food security in suburban Hanoi under the impact of urbanization.
