History

Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) was established in accordance with Decree No. 97/CP, dated December 10, 1993 by the Government, and has been reorganized by amalgamating the three leading universities in Hanoi: University of Hanoi, Hanoi Teachers’ Training College No.1 and Hanoi Foreign Language Teachers’ Training College. VNU formally operated under the Regulation promulgated by the Prime Minister on September 5, 1994.

The tradition of Vietnam National University, Hanoi closely connects with the history of foundation and development of symbolized universities in Vietnam in the whole period of the 20th century, starting from the University of Indochina (May 16, 1906) with its location in 19 Le Thanh Tong, Hanoi. The University of Indochina was the first modern university in Vietnam (under the French colonization) with multidisciplinary type.

After the victory of the August Revolution, the people’s democratic state founded the Vietnam National University by inheriting the University of Indochina and opened the first academic year on November 15, 1945. By following the organization and training programmes of a multidisciplinary university,  Vietnam National University acquired the humankind’s cultural genius while building the basis of the revolutionary education, in order to respond to the needs of training researchers for the resistance war and the state building.

After the peace restoration, some universities were established in the North such as University of Hanoi 91956) and Hanoi Teachers’ Training College (including the Faculty of Foreign Languages, which then became the Hanoi Foreign Language Teachers’ Training College in 1967). The University of Hanoi was a multidisciplinary university of basic science, directly inherited the tradition of the University  of Indochina and the Vietnam National University. As far as staff, physical and technical facilities, and training programmes are concerned, the present Vietnam National University, Hanoi is the continuation of the tradition and prestige of all the leading universities in Vietnam from University of Indochina, Vietnam National University in the past to University of Hanoi and Hanoi Teachers’ Training College later on.

After 10 years of building and development, Vietnam National University, Hanoi,  a model of multidisciplinary university with great scale, with the task of producing qualified human resources, and scientific and technical talents for the country, was confirmed. On February 1, 2001, the Government promulgated Decree No. 07/2001/ND-CP related to Vietnam National Universities. It is the historical landmark marking the new stage of VNU’s scale and quality development – a leading “multidisciplinary center of excellence for undergraduate and postgraduate training, science and technology research and application”, which plays the motive force in the higher educational system of the whole country.

On February 12, 2001, the Prime Minister signed Decision No. 16/2001/QD-TTg promulgating the Regulation on the organization and operation of Vietnam National University, affirming and strengthening the autonomy of Vietnam National University in various activities, especially in training, scientific and technical research, organization-personnel, planning-finance and international relations.

Implementing the Government’s Decree and the Regulation promulgated by the Prime Minister, VNU's professors and students are making efforts to build up VNU into a center of excellence on a par with advanced universities in the region towards international level, worthy of the trust of the Party, State and people.
