7. Official thesis title:

Analysis of the bacterial community in the soil where Ngoc Linh ginseng (Panax vietnamensis Ha et Grushv.) is cultivated and selection of strains with application potentials.

8. Major: Microbiology                                                   9. Code: 9420101.07

10. Supervisors: Dr. Pham Huong Son, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham The Hai

11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis

- This is the first report in Vietnam investigating the diversity of the bacterial community in the soil where Ngoc Linh ginseng is cultivated in Nam Tra My district, Quang Nam province of Vietnam.

- Successful discovery of a novel bacterial species Paracoccus panacisoli sp. nov., which has been published in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology.

- Successful selection of a number of bioactive bacterial strains with application potentials: 04 strains of phosphate solubilizing bacteria (with content of soluble P2O5 from 50.12 to 103.17 µg/ml), 07 strains of IAA producing bacteria (producing > 20 µg/ml IAA) and a strain able to transform ginsenoside Rb1.

12. Practical applicability, if any:

- The results of the diversity of the bacterial community in the soil where Ngoc Linh ginseng is cultivated can be used as the basis for further studies to improve productivity, quality as well as to develop other arable areas in Vietnam for Ngoc Linh ginseng cultivation.

- Bacterial strains selected with high activities of phosphate-solubilizing and

IAA producing can be used for production of biofertilizers and plant growth products.

- The isolated strain that has the ability of transforming ginsenoside Rb1 can be used in processing industry of ginseng products.

13. Further research directions, if any

- Test production of some biofertilizers with different formulations (solution, powder) for trials in ginseng cultivation.

- Evaluation of the activity of the selected strain in transforming ginsenoside Rb1 in Ngoc Linh ginseng products.
