VNU HUS High School for gifted student shines at Russia’s chemistry Olympiad

Two out of the four members representing Vietnam at the International Project Chemistry Olympiad in Russia have earned gold and bronze medals, the Ministry of Education and Training said.

On Monday, the ministry's Secondary Education Department announced that all Vietnamese students advanced to the final round of the Olympiad for the first time.

The Vietnam News Agency reported that the team clinched a gold medal.

Le Minh Duc, a 10th-grade student at HUS High School for Gifted Students in Hanoi, secured a gold medal, while Le Huynh Anh Quy from Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted in Da Nang City, located in central Vietnam, earned a bronze medal at the Olympiad.

The competition took place at Moscow State University from last Friday to this Monday.

Given the medals, the Vietnamese team was honored as the most excellent at the Olympiad.

The Project Chemistry Olympiad has been held for students from grades 8 to 11 at the Chemistry Department of Moscow State University since 2020.

The Olympiad consists of two sections, qualifying (theoretical) and final (practical).

During the theoretical section, each contestant of the Olympiad is set to take theoretical exams related to inorganic, physical, and organic chemistry.

The better participants will enter the final stage.

In the final section, each participant of the Olympiad is required to find the most optimal method for solving a specific practical problem.

The contestants who have showed the best results are named for a practical step to bring their completed project to life.

The four Vietnamese students beating many rivals in the qualifying round to reach the final section include Ha Thanh Nhan, Ngoc Chau Hoang, and Le Huynh Anh Quy from Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted in Da Nang, and Le Minh Duc from HUS High School for Gifted Students in Hanoi.

Some 1,500 students across Russia participated in the qualifying round of the 2024 Project Chemistry Olympiad.

Besides, numerous students from other countries, including Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, India, Turkey, Brazil, and Vietnam, competed in the round, but only Vietnamese representatives came through the round to roll in the final one.
