Summary of the new findings of the thesis:

Our research results confirm the validity of the predefined theoretical framework and provide answers to three research questions. Firstly, there is a real need for medical terminology’s translation while research and publications in this domain are still limited, so more research is needed on this topic. Secondly, research on the current situation of using French-Vietnamese medical terminology shows the difficulties in translating French medical terminology into Vietnamese, which are mainly related to the lack of linguistic knowledge, specialized knowledge and translation skills. Finally, in order to address these issues, in addition to their proficiency in both languages, translators need to learn about the domain in question and how to appropriately use the different translation strategies, basing on three translation steps including comprehension, deverbalization and reexpression.

Theoretically, our research has contributed to confirming the theoretical framework, thus illustrating the ability to apply the interpretive theory of translation in translating medical terminology, while proposing a medical terminology translation model from French into Vietnamese basing on this theory.

In terms of research methodology, our thesis is another illustration of corpus analysis and content analysis, combining two qualitative and quantitative approaches from which other graduate students can draw advantages and disadvantages of the above mentioned methods, and improve their research by considering the strengths and weaknesses of this thesis.

Practical applicability, if any:

Practically, this study is a reference document for translators about their professional practice in general, and especially when they are faced with the translation of medical terminology from French into Vietnamese. This thesis is also a reference document for teaching translation for apprentices, especially in teaching medical translation.

Further research directions, if any:

This research may open up further research directions. Firstly, the interpretive theory of translation of Danica Seleskovitch and Marianne Lederer can be applied in medical interpretation and translation. Secondly, opinions from readers as well as translators of the translations can be collect to compare with results from text analysis to obtain more adequate results. Finally, expanding the scope of research with medical vulgarization texts to gain an overview of translation strategies for various types of texts and so to satisfy the practical needs of medical translation in Vietnam.
