11. Summary of the new findings of the thesis :
- This is the first exhaustive research work on the language policies of the countries of Indonesia and Malaysia on the following facets: National language policy; and ethnic groups’ languages policy, including both migrant groups, i.e. Chinese and Indian; and indigenous groups. The thesis’s results will shed light on some theoretical aspects of language policy in particular, and enrich the yet adequate volume of researches on language policy of the countries in the region.
- The study of language policies of Indonesia and Malaysia will contribute to enhancing our understanding of both the successes and shortcomings in the course of language policy implementation in Vietnam. It will also provide concrete examples in the areas of popularizing and developing national languages, of conserving and developing ethnic groups’ languages, and of appreciating the position and role of foreign languages (especially of English).
12. Practical applicability, if any :
The study outcomes will be used in undergraduate and graduate curricula as well as in the scope of Area Studies, i.e. first and foremost in Southeast Asian Studies in particular and in Oriental Studies in general.
13. Further research directions, if any :
- To study language policies of other archipelago Southeast Asian countries, i.e.: Singapore, The Philippines, and Brunei Darussalam.
- To study language policies of mainland Southeast Asian countries.
