At the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tuan - Director of VNU’s World Bank Project Management Unit updated the situation, role and responsibility of VNU in signing sub-loan contracts with the World Bank. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tuan presented the issues that the unit had been implementing, such as the personnel organization, the detailed design situation, the start-up plan, non-construction activities, roles and functions of VNU’s member universities and functional departments in performing non-construction works.
Speaking at the meeting, VNU President Le Quan emphasized that VNU currently had the following three advantages in implementing the items within the WB-financed project: 1) the completion of ground clearance; 2) the complete infrastructure; and 3) Vietnam's transparent bidding regulations for improving the selection of quality contractors for the project structures. He also emphasized the practicality of this project as VNU had moved its headquarters to Hoa Lac and sent students to study there 5 years ahead of schedule. VNU has shifted from building structures for individual units to building for common and most urgent needs of all units.
The WB-funded project will greatly contribute to VNU's development indicators from now to 2030 as VNU aims to increase its international publication and patents, revenue from science and technology transfer as well as the index of relations with businesses in order to serve the transition from a purely academic institution to an innovative university centre.
Ms. Stefanie Stallmeister expressed her hope that the synergies between the World Bank and the Partnership for Higher Education Reform (PHER) funded by USAID would bring positive developments to VNU in particular and Vietnam higher education system in general.
