Chat GPT: Disruption in legal education and authorship?

On February 17, 2023, the VNU University of Law held the lecture "Chat GPT: Disruption in legal education and authorship?" with the speaker as Prof. Xuan Thao Nguyen - Director of the Asian Law Center, School of Law, University of Washington, USA. The lecture had the participation of more than 300 delegates via the Zoom platform and more than 150 delegates participated in person at the meeting room, including lecturers, students of the University of Law and other training institutions. In particular, the lecture was honored to welcome Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hong Thao and Prof. Park Ki Gab, 02 members of the United Nations International Law Commission attended online.

In the first part of the lecture, Professor Xuan Thao Nguyen gave an overview to all participants about the concept of ChatGPT. "Chat GPT is a language optimization model for dialogue" she explained. However, Chat GPT's database is only updated through 2021.

"The information sources of Chat GPT may be limited by intellectual property rights, thereby affecting the accuracy of the information this software can provide to users. Therefore, at this time, the application of Chat GPT in legal research and training still has many limitations" Prof. Xuan Thao Nguyen said. As a basis for her arguments, she posed some questions to Chat GPT, and the software was unable to perform fairly basic tasks such as looking up information about a prominent lawsuit, which is very familiar to US law students.

So what purpose can Chat GPT serve? According to her, one of the strengths of Chat GPT was multiple choice questions, this software could give relatively accurate answers, and when questioned about why a particular answer was selected, Chat GPT could also provide a decent justification. Secondly, Chat GPT can explain dry, confusing law regulations into easy-to-understand sentences that are easy to grasp.

In the Q&A part, participants had the opportunity to give questions to Professor Xuan Thao. The majority of these inquiries concerned Chat GPT's future potential and the challenges it might present to legal research and training.
