Assessing Language Proficiency: Challenges and Trends in the New Era

Within the framework of the 9th Annual Conference of the Asian Association for Language Assessment (AALA) and the Academic Forum on English Language Testing in Asia (AFELTA) held in Japan on September 2 to 6, 2023, the delegation from VNU University of Languages and International Studies led by Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Quynh (Director of the Science and Technology Office) participated and contributed two quality presentations as well as exchanged and discussed cooperative projects in the field of foreign language training and assessment in Asia.

According to Ms. Jirada Wudthayagorn, President, Asian Association of Language Assessment (2022-2023), Director, Chulalongkorn University Language Institute, AALA 2023 with the theme, "Assessing Language Proficiency: Challenges and Trends in the New Era," is incredibly timely for all of us who continue to thrive in this ever-evolving era. “With 3 symposiums, 34 papers, and 10 posters, I am confident that this conference will delve into the many challenges of assessing language proficiency, as well as shed light on the latest trends in this field. Furthermore, I believe this event will serve as an invaluable platform for lecturers, researchers, practitioners, and students to exchange ideas, share expertise, best practices, and discuss related issues. Therefore, I strongly encourage all presenters and participants to seize this opportunity not only to broaden your knowledge and stay up-to-date with the latest insights, tips, and techniques in language assessment, but also to expand your professional networks in this vibrant field”.

At the AALA Conference, the VNU ULIS delegation presented a report on the topic “Classroom-based assessment practices in Vietnam: the what and the why”. The report is the product of collaborative research between ULIS-VNU and the University of Huddersfield (UK).

Within the framework of the AFELTA Forum, the report of the delegation focused on providing a professional development framework for those who develop exam technical specifications.

In addition, the delegation interacted, connected and held a number of meetings with representatives of testing centers and units in the Asian region.
