The year 2023 - a special year.

VNU solemnly celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Government's promulgation of the Decree on its establishment and 117 years of tradition. This was a significant milestone in VNU’s history and also a valuable opportunity to extend VNU’s gratitude to the Party and State leaders as well as its national and international partners. This was also a special occasion for VNU to review, evaluate its achievements and the learned lessons, thereby upholding its traditions, fostering pride as well as strengthening the determination to accomplish VNU’s development strategy in the new period.

VNU was happy and proud to be honoured with the First-class Labour Order as the State’s recognition of its outstanding contributions to the nation’s construction and protection.

Notably, on this occasion, Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong sent a letter of congratulations to VNU. He wrote, “On behalf of the leaders of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and the State, and with personal feelings, I would like to acknowledge, congratulate and highly appreciate VNU for its achievements in recent years, especially since the relocation of its headquarters to VNU town in Hoa Lac” and affirmed “After 30 years of building and development, VNU has continuously strived and accomplished many outstanding achievements, becoming a large multidisciplinary higher education training and research centre with a particularly important position in the country, playing a leading role in the Vietnamese higher education system”.

VNU owes the above achievements to the attention and close direction of the Party and State leaders; the help of ministries, central agencies and local governments; the companionship of businesses, national and international partners; and especially, the intelligence, dedication, passion and efforts of its leaders, scientists, lecturers, students and other staff members.

In 2024, inheriting the glorious 117-year-long history and traditions, and continuing the 30-year achievements, VNU will promote its intelligence and solidarity to rise on the map of leading universities in Asia and the world, successfully fulfilling its mission and tasks assigned by the Party Central Committee. VNU will focus on implementing a number of key tasks in the coming year.

The first task is to build a smart, modern, sustainable VNU town in Hoa Lac, an innovation centre linked with businesses, with a focus on diversifying investment and development resources.

The second task is to attract talents with a flexible and effective mechanism under the motto of creating an environment for excellent scientists to maximize their professional capacity to create high quality, valuable works and make practical contributions to the country’s socio-economic development.

The third task is to improve training quality with the aim of comprehensively educating and training students with good expertise, integration capability, national tradition and culture awareness, and especially, high physical fitness; implement policies to sustainably develop basic sciences in parallel with increasing the size of engineering-technology, creativity and arts training linked with socio-economic development requirements; promote online training and digital transformation in training management; and innovate the talent training programs from high school to doctoral level.

The fourth task is to promote the strengths of cooperation with the 12 Northwest provinces in parallel with enhancing cooperation activities with coastal provinces for the socio-economic development in the coastal area; further connect with investors and businesses from key economic regions. VNU will become a reliable partner of businesses in science and technology transfer and innovation.

On behalf of VNU's leaders, I would like to express our sincere thanks to the leaders of the Party, the State and the Government for their trust, guidance and facilitation for VNU to fulfill its responsibilities; to the concerned ministries, sectors and agencies for their support and collaboration with VNU; to domestic and foreign partners for their effective cooperation with VNU over the past year; and to all VNU’s scientists, lecturers, students and other staff members for their contributions to the development of VNU.
