On the 2nd and 3rd of October 2023, International School – Vietnam National University, Hanoi, in collaboration with Cardiff Metropolitan University, United Kingdom, organized a training program themed “Quality Assurance System, Construction and Development of Training Programs, Learning Outcomes, and Evaluation.” The program is a part of the research collaboration between the two institutions, aiming to enhance the capabilities of the university staff and faculty members of International School in quality assurance processes for training programs; designing teaching programs to improve the quality of education and to meet regional and international standards.
On the first day of the training session, university staff and faculty members attended the presentations on “Building an Internal Quality Assurance System.” Cardiff Metropolitan University speakers presented the framework and assessment standards of the United Kingdom, Vietnam, and ASEAN (including the QAA and AUN linkage), as well as an overview and comparison of reference points between the United Kingdom, Vietnam, and ASEAN.
Quality assurance systems – based on the guidelines in the UK Quality Code of the United Kingdom, ensure the quality of education and accreditation, including management, quality enhancement, and the QAA’s risk approach.
The speakers also presented a table comparing the standards of higher education programs in the United Kingdom, ASEAN, and Vietnam. From this table, the speakers asked participants to analyze and compare the quality assurance systems of the United Kingdom, ASEAN, and Vietnam. In the following part, the speakers shared experiences on how to further strengthen the quality assurance system in universities. According to the speakers, to achieve this, it is necessary to clearly define what constitutes a good quality program, how to measure the program’s quality, and how to continuously improve its quality. The speakers suggested that the institution should develop a set of program evaluation standards to adhere to and implement during the training deployment.
The first day of the training program provided much valuable knowledge about quality assurance activities. In addition to providing information, the speakers and participants addressed situations and issues raised by the attendees. On the second day of the program, the speakers introduced participants to methods of designing lesson plans and teaching programs, proposed new ideas, and highlighted the differences in planning, designing, and approving new programs among our institutions. Designing and evaluating lectures based on learning outcomes focused primarily on practical sessions with exercises.
The training program is designed to cater to the competencies and characteristics of the partner university in Vietnam. The speakers do not just impart knowledge; they also organize interactive sessions to listen to the thoughts of the staff and faculty members, and determine which relevant areas would be appropriate and beneficial.
Cardiff University is the largest university in Wales and the 10th largest in the UK. According to the latest Research Excellence Framework rankings, the University’s research is ranked 5th in quality and 2nd in terms of impact among UK universities.
Connecting the two institutions through the training program “Quality Assurance System, Curriculum Development and Implementation, Outcome Standards and Evaluation” brings significant value and meaning to higher education at International School.
