Sustainability at NUS: A Whole-of-University Approach for a Greener Future

On November 28, VNU held the workshop entitled “Sustainability at NUS: A Whole-of-University Approach for a Greener Future”.

Prof. LUM Sau Kim, Vice President, Global Relations Office & NUS Business School shared about the Sustainability at NUS and their achievements in implementing Sustainable Development Goals.

As we all know, the pace of climate change has been intensifying in recent years with its impacts becoming clearer than ever. As such, Sustainable Development is recognized as one of the biggest societal challenges of the twenty-first century. As a knowledge hub, higher education institutions can serve as an engine to induce changes and pave the way for a more sustainable future within their communities and in the wider society. National University of Singapore (NUS) serves as a successful model, in which sustainability values have been incorporated throughout the university’s missions and practices. In today’s workshop, we will learn about how NUS has adopted a whole-of-university approach that integrates education, research & innovation, and operational management to build a greener economy within its campus, as well as empowering the next generation of sustainability leaders. In their journey towards sustainability, NUS has accumulated a wealth of experiences and today, our special guest will share with us about 3 case studies which will showcase how NUS has created award-winning climate-adapted building, leveraged their campus as living lab, and test-bedded student ideas to promote behavioral change.

Sustainability has increasingly defined the mission of institutes of higher learning. This workshop shares how the National University of Singapore (NUS) manages and strengthens our contributions towards building a green economy and empowering the next generation of sustainability stewards. Specifically, NUS adopts a whole-of-university approach that integrates education, research & innovation, and campus operations with strategic oversight by a Sustainability and Climate Action Council. The presentation features 3 case studies that showcases: how we created an award-winning climate-adapted building; leveraging on our campus as a living lab; and test-bedding student ideas to “nudge” behavioral change.

VNU Vice President Pham Bao Sơn share, in such context, science and technology have demonstrated their critical importance in achieving the goals of sustainable development. The Vietnamese Government has additionally declared in the National Action Plan for implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that science and technology must serve as the foundation and impetus for the nation's sustainable development.

As one of the leading universities in research and innovation in Vietnam, one of VNU’s strategies is to focus on research and innovation to strengthen our leading position in research, education, training, and technology transfer, contributing to the sustainable development of Vietnam as well the region.

Besides implementing the Vietnamese Government’s strategy and framework on sustainable development, VNU also constructed its own frameworks and plans embedded in our education and research activities as well as our everyday operations at VNU headquarter and our member universities, schools, institutes, and service units. Its latest actions include VNU's net zero carbon plan and promoting the growth of research centers, key laboratories, and strong research groups to not only fulfill VNU's sustainable development purpose but also serve some of Vietnam most pressing challenges.
