Mr. Yamada Takio: VNU has always been a leader in higher education in Vietnam

We would like to introduce the full speech by Mr. Yamada Takio, Ambassador of Japan to Vietnam on the 30th anniversary of the Government's promulgation of the Decree on VNU establishment and 117 years of tradition in Hoa Lac.

I would like to extend my congratulations on the 30th Anniversary of the Government's promulgation of the Decree on Vietnam National University' s establishment. It is a great honor for me to have this opportunity to address you today on behalf of the diplomatic corps at such a grand ceremony.

VNU was founded in 1993 as an educational and research institute under the direct control of the Prime Minister. Although VNU has established for only 30 years, the university inherits the long history and excellent tradition of Indochina University, founded in 1906. As Vietnam's national top university, VNU has always been a leader in higher education in Vietnam and has cultivated numerous excellent human resources to contribute to the development of Vietnam. Graduates of VNU are playing a significant role not only in Vietnam, but also in Japan and around the world. We would like to pay tribute to the great efforts of the past professors of VNU and all those involved.

Currently, VNU has nine affiliated universities, providing top-level education. I would like to express my gratitude once again to each of the affiliate universities, including the University of Languages and International Studies and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, for cultivating outstanding human resources who will serve as valuable bridges between Japan, Vietnam and the rest of the world. The affiliated universities have received high expectations from companies and universities in Japan and other countries. I hope that this 30th anniversary will be an opportunity to further strengthen the partnership and cooperation between various countries and VNU.

Vietnam is now a country that is receiving attention from around the world. Many dignitaries from around the world have visited Vietnam to strengthen relations with the country. For Japan, Vietnam is also a very important partner. During his recent visit to Japan in last month, President Vo Van Thuong and Prime Minister Kishida Fumio agreed to upgrade Japan – Viet Nam partnership to a "Comprehensive strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia and the world" at their summit meeting.

In the Vietnam-Japan Joint Statement, Vietnam Japan University - established as an affiliated institution of the National University of Hanoi, was mentioned as a symbolic project of the cooperation between the two countries in the field of education. With the aim of becoming one of the top universities in Asia, under the cooperative efforts of the top leaders of two countries, Vietnam Japan University has been steadily developing step by step as a university that cultivates human resources who can play active roles in both countries and in the global society. In September of this year, Their Imperial Highnesses Crown Prince and Crown Princess Akishino visited Vietnam Japan University and met with students and faculty members of the university. This was an important opportunity for people in both countries to reaffirm the importance of Vietnam Japan University. The Government of Japan will continue to support Vietnam Japan University - a symbol of the friendship between the two countries - in a comprehensive effort to further enhance the university's growth and development.

Finally, I would like to conclude my remarks by wishing VNU continued development and distinguished guests health and happiness. Thank you.
